I actually managed to write a new flashfiction last week, so I'm positive that this one hasn't been shared yet. :P And since there's nothing else to say, let's just dive right in!
The Prompt
"When he lifted his head, she barely recognised him for the bruises." -The Most Dangerous Writing App
The Story
When he lifted his head, she barely recognized him for the bruises. She fell to her knees by his side, swiping her hair away from her face with one hand.
"Oh my goodness, Clay. Can you hear me?"
A moan escaped his lips as his head lolled towards her. "R-Rose?"
"Yes, it's me." Glancing around, she dug into her satchel for her salve. Only two spreads left.
A cough wracked her brother's body. "You can't be here. She'll kill you."
She chose not to respond, instead dabbing a cloth in a thick layer of salve and bathing his face with it. The bruises tingled and began to ever-so-slowly heal.
Clay twisted on the ground. "Don't - you should save it-"
"Oh, hush."
A slow laugh filled the space around them. Rose whipped around to see nothing but shadows. "Come out!" she ordered, biting her lip to keep the tremble from her tone. "Unless you are too afraid to stand without your shadows."
"Oh, my dear child." The words seemed to echo from all around. "Don't you see? I am the shadows."
"Rose," Clay mumbled, letting go of her hand and nodding towards the exit. "Get out, now. While there's still time."
She shook her head. "No. It's time to face the fear."
Clay coughed again and fought to lever himself up on one elbow. "Didn't you see what she did to me? And I'm-"
Rose gently pushed him back down, but refused to look at him. I can't let down my guard. "Hush."
"Your brother is correct. You will only receive pain if you try to stand against me."
"Maybe." Rose got to her feet and forced herself to inhale through the anger in her chest. "But you killed my sister. You mugged my brother. You've lied and stolen and destroyed just about everything dear to me." She snapped her fingers, and flames licked up her forearms from her palms. "Your time has come."
"Foolish girl." The cackle oozed shadows towards her. "You think your fire can defeat a single one of my shadows? They do not burn."
A smirk found its way onto Rose's face. "No. But that is not all that a fire can do."
And the room exploded with light.
