The Five Ws

Although I’m sure all of you already know this, the five Ws are the five questioning words that start (surprise!) with the letter W: who, what, when, where, and why. (Of course, there’s also how, but forget about that one for a minute.)

In this post I’m going to answer those five questions pertaining to this blog.

Who am I writing this blog for?

There are three answers to this question: God, me, and you.

First, I’m writing because I believe God has called me to be a writer. I can glorify him through my words, be it on a blog, in a story, or out of my mouth. By starting this blog, I am obeying God’s call, and I hope to impact a few of you spiritually while I’m at it.

Second, I’m writing it for me. I love writing, I’ve wanted a blog for a long time, and blogs are a great way to attract potential fans (or so I hear). So yes, this is also a career thing. 😉

Third, you. I’m writing it for you to read. I’m writing to reach you. I’m writing to impact you. Other than the writing itself, you are the only way this blog is going to happen. So the very fact that you’re reading (or skimming) this post is proof to me that I have at least you for me to write for. Thanks!

What am I going to write on this blog?

This blog will mostly be about writing. I might have a few posts on chocolate or coffee here and there, but for the most part the posts will pertain to writing (i.e., good writing websites, recommended books, etc.) Here and there you’ll find updates on what’s going on with my books, and I also plan to have guest posts, a few scattered writing contests, and if things pick up, I might have some other contests for T-shirt designs and the like. I plan to have a few fun things, like quizzes pertaining to my books, crossword puzzles, stuff like that. So I have plans!

When am I going to write on this blog?

At first, I’ll take it slow. A post a week should do it, I think. After all, as that famous fable-teller once said, “Slow and steady wins the race!” If I decide that I’d like to write more or less, I’ll let you know. However, for now, once a week is the plan. When school starts back up (*grimace*), it might drop. High school is very time-consuming, haha.

Where am I going to write this blog?

That’s kind of a dumb question, so I won’t dignify it with answer.

Why am I writing this blog?

This might take a while, so grab a cup of cocoa and put your feet up.

As I already mentioned, I’m writing for various reasons: God’s calling and my career choice, entertainment and inspiration for you, and because I love writing. But there are a few other reasons too.

One that comes to mind is the need for more good, solid books/blogs. In the afore-mentioned “inspiration speech” (find it here), I said a lot about the books I see at my local library. And while there are a few priceless treasures to be found, they are few and far between.

I would like to change that.

I’m currently getting emails from the publishing company Simon & Schuster. At first, I subscribed because they have published some pretty swag books, and I thought I might be able to find a few more.

Nope.

I’ve fine-tuned my preferences for which types of emails I get: YA books, fantasy, action/adventure, etc. etc. And as of yet each of the five to ten books listed in each email, every single one of them as to do with transgender, BLM, homosexuality, or something of the kind. What is worse is that the reviews for those books are positively glowing. (To be clear, I have nothing against people with dark skin – but I think white lives and copper lives and every other color life matters just as much as a black life. ;))

“So, Joelle,” you say in a concerned tone. “Why in the world haven’t you unsubscribed?”

I’m so glad you asked.

The simple answer is this: those emails make excellent fuel.

No, I don’t print them out and stuff them in a fireplace to keep me warm in the winter. But I come away from reading them with a burning desire to create something better. Something that stands for what’s right. Something that – yes, you guessed it – inspires. And not inspiring you to use cuss words or take drugs or anything like that. Something that inspires you to go out and save the world, do hard things, or make friends with that girl over there even if the supposedly “cool” kids think she’s trash. Something that, in a small way, helps to make you into a great person (’cause I know you’ve got it in you).

But, most importantly, I want my stories to inspire you to love, serve, work with, worship, laugh with, cry with, and resound with the one who created you. Yeah, you know who I’m talking about. (Hint: one of his names is “dog” spelled backwards.)

Anyway, looping back to the beginning question, I’m blogging to get that ball rolling. I’m working on several projects right now, and I seriously hope that each one manages to touch someone’s life in a personal, miraculous way. We’ll see what happens there.

With that said, I’m going to need your help. Let me know what you think of the blog, my goals, the evilness of coffee, anything and everything. Feedback is SOO helpful. But please try and remain neutral – not too scathing but not too glowing either. After all, I’m one of those people whose ego could use a bit of a haircut. 😉
