I usually try not to write dark, depressing stories. And to be fair, this one isn't that bad. But it's not sunshine and lollipops, either, so... just be prepared for that. XD
The Prompt
Once again from The Most Dangerous Writing App (are you surprised? XD)
"To his horror, he realised he'd been this way before." (yes, British spelling and everything XD)
The Story
To his horror, he realized he'd been this way before. The locked door, the tapestry on the wall - it all was exactly the same as the first room he had been in.
What is this place? he wondered. Am I to be trapped in this maze forever?
But surely he could find his way out. There was no need to panic - he simply needed to trust his brain and be calm and he'd find his way back outside eventually.
Placing his left hand on the wall by the door, he exited the room for the second time and began his trek through the halls, keeping his hand on the wall at all times. This should work, he told himself. It always does in the movies, at least.
So you can imagine his dismay when he found himself, once again, in the room with the locked door and the tapestry.
Growling, the man placed his right hand on the wall and exited again, only to find himself back where he started mere minutes after he had left.
Frustrated now, the man went to the locked door and tried to break the lock or beat down the door. No luck. He was trapped in an endless maze that seemed only to shift every time he thought he had conquered it.
I need to get out of here, he thought.
"You will never get out."
The voice startled him. He whipped around, his back to the locked door, searching for the owner of the soft, accented tones. "Who are you?"
"I am the Maker of the Maze. You will never get out."
The man jutted his chin out. "I will, I assure you."
"No. You will not. Many are the people who have tried before you, and many are the people who have failed. If you continue seeking to escape through your own means, you will join those who have failed and wander, lost, for the rest of your days."
Blinking, the man exited the room in search of the voice. Still no sign of another man.
"However, if you are willing to sacrifice your pride and seek my help, I can find you and lead you out of this maze."
"Why would you?"
There was a soft sigh. "Have you not known? Have you not heard me before? I have been nudging your heart for years, yet you always close and lock your door against me. This is your crossroads. I can save you, but you have to let me in. You have to trust me to lead you out."
The man raked his fingers through his hair, staring at the locked door. The soft voice did sound familiar, but he didn't want to acknowledge what that meant. I can save myself, thank you very much, he thought, but he did not say it aloud. Instead, he spoke to the darkness, "Thanks, but no thanks. Maybe later. I want to solve it myself first."
"What if there is no later?"
Snorting, the man placed his left hand on the wall again and began to walk. "There's always a later."
He never made it out of the maze.
Aaand there you have it, folks! What do you think this about? Did you catch the symbolism? Did it make sense at all? XD When have you been like the man in the maze, and when have you trusted the Maker instead? I'd love to hear about it! Just let me know in the comments below. ;)
Until next time,
Take courage, pursue Christ, and smile while you still have teeth!! ^_^
Love this story, friend!!! You did a great job with the symbolism. And I’m floored that you write these in five minutes. 😂😆
I love this story! Great job!!!
WHOA. That was amazing, girl!!! I totally caught the symbolism ( I absolutely love symbolic stories XD) and it made complete sense! I haven't ever used the prompts from the Most Dangerous Writing App, but I should do that, because they seem pretty cool. :D (And do you actually write these stories using the app, not just the prompt?)
