Story Day!!

Belated Story Day, that is. XD I wasn’t feeling the best yesterday and just wasn’t up for posting. So, here we are, a day late. *bows*

Turns out that I miscounted last week and this post will actually be the last Caretaker post, instead of last week’s. I should’ve looked at a calendar and realized there were five Saturdays before I posted the contest winners. 😛 Ah, well, lesson learned.

That aside, welcome one and all to the 20th and final installment of The Caretaker. Thanks for sticking with me. 🙂

Recap

The Commanders have moved locations so they won’t be overheard – and so that another guest can join them: one you will meet today.

The Caretaker – Part 1.20

The High Commander led them to a small, private room. The black curtains draped across the walls barely hid the gleam of silver beneath them. This place was sealed – no sound could carry out of it, and no air could come in except at random intervals when a button on the inside was pushed and air pumped into the chamber. A holojecter was situated across from the door, though at the moment no hologram hovered above it.

Kenaz motioned to the simple settee against one wall, waiting for the Commanders to take their seats before hitting the button that closed the door with a swoosh. A single chair, neither elaborate nor plain, sat across from the couch, and this was the one the High Commander took.

“Before we begin,” he said, pulling up his sleeve and revealing his silver armband, “we have another guest. Ember, begin frequency.”

“Beginning frequency,” an accented female voice answered in robotic tones. “Frequency established and connected to the holojector roughly six feet from you.”

“Thank you, Ember. Ember, off.”

“Have a good day, Commander.” His armband flickered, then its glow failed.

The bright lighting of the room dimmed as the holojector to Lasha’s left sank into the floor before projecting a silvery hologram: a life-sized person, cloaked from head to foot and standing with arms crossed and hands in the sleeves of their robe. A hood overshadowed their entire face, and when they spoke, their voice had been disguised so that Lasha couldn’t tell if it was a male or a female, or if they had an accent at all.

“Greetings, Caretakers – and Commander.” They dipped their head in Kenaz’s direction.

Instantly Lasha knew why she’d been so nervous. Oh, for heaven’s sake, why did this person have to be here?!

Commander Enexor’s eyebrows shot almost above his hairline. “Are you serious, High Commander?”

Kenaz turned and stared at Enexor with sharp eyes. “Don’t you know who this is?”

Enexor nodded with a gulp. His words came out in a hoarse whisper. “The Commander of the Outside Realms.”

You’re welcome. 🙂

Until next time,

Take courage, pursue God, and smile while you still have teeth!! 😉
