Recap
Lasha is starting to feel guilty about not telling Calah that she’ll never see her family again – but she must stick to her duty no matter the cost.
The Caretaker – Part 1.7
It didn’t take long to pop back into the library, grab the records Illiana had found, and leave. From the rapid rate at which Calah and Illiana spewed out their words, Lasha figured they were trying to get as much said in the little time they knew they had.
She didn’t comment.
“Okay, where to now, Commander?” Calah asked, bouncing up behind Lasha as the doors to the library closed behind them. Muted clicks echoed around the hall as their boots hit the salt-and-pepper tile floor.
“The Worlden.” Lasha tightened her grip on the files Illiana had dug up and compiled. “We need to refresh our memories on the worlds we’re heading to and make a plan of action. After that we’ll stop at the Weaponry to get outfitted, then head to the LHC again and leap out of here.”
“Sounds like a plan!” Calah replied, cheerfulness in her voice. “Will we need maps?”
Sakes alive, this girl was as full of questions as a lufisk was full of teeth. “No.”
Lasha’s hard answer seemed to deflate Calah’s balloon. She slowed her excited pace and stayed quiet until they pushed open the doors of the Worlden.
It was one of the largest rooms on Base. With dark walls, flooring, and a ceiling so tall it was draped in shadows, it was the perfect place for the holograms Leapers used to examine the worlds in each Realm.
Calah shut the door behind her softly, staring wide-eyed around her at the lights floating throughout the room – brilliant white and blue and purple stars, slowly orbiting planets, bald moons barely visible, icy comets streaking around and around.
Lasha seized her opportunity. “Alright, rookie, show me your stuff,” she murmured in a low voice so as not to disturb the shadowy humanoid figures weaving between the floating universes. “We’ll check Velia first.”
The darkness hid Calah’s throat, but Lasha heard the gulp. “Velia?” the apprentice asked.
“Yep.”
“Okay…” Still she hesitated.
Lasha sighed. “What is a Realm?”
“A universe with livable planets guarded by a Commander,” Calah answered instantly.
“And what is a world?”
“A livable planet in a Realm.”
“What is Velia?”
“A world in the Spring Realm.”
“Therefore…”
“Therefore we should head to the far right corner, where the Spring Realm would be, and look for a green planet – Velia’s covered in jungles, right?”
Lasha let her breath whoosh out, puffing strands of auburn hair from her face. At least the girl knew something. “Lead the way.”
Wrap Up
Phew, there you go! I know that was a lot of info to swallow at once, so sorry ’bout that. 😉 Let me know if it made sense and, as always:
