Story

“This place is packed!” remarked a young man with chocolate colored hair, periwinkle blue eyes, and an apprehensive look. He was dressed in casual jeans, tennis shoes, and a red T-shirt covered by a black leather jacket.

His companion, a girl with light brown hair and hazel-gold eyes, was wearing black leggings that reached to her calves, a deep blue skirt, and a white blouse. A delicate chain around her neck held a beautiful silver charm shaped as a flowering lily. She pursed her lips and nodded. “Remind me why we’re here again?”

“You know, acting normal, just going to a dinner theater. We can pick up some information here.” The young man placed some cash on a ticket booth counter and was given two tickets in return. “Here, Kayla.” He handed her a ticket, which she took and studied.

“What play is it? Who’s the director?”

“It’s a reenactment of Homer’s ‘Iliad’. Can you guess who the director is?” A mischievous smile danced at the corners of the boy’s lips as he led Kayla into the theater.

Kayla’s eyes widened. “Really? You don’t think this is too obvious?”

“Nah.” The young man scooted past tables until he reached an empty one for two. He plopped down into his seat and started looking at the menu.

“Oh, Aiden. Why did I have to get partnered with you?” Kayla groaned as she took her seat, much more gracefully than her companion. “When will you stop being so reckless?”

“Me? Reckless? Never. Oh, hamburger! That sounds really good. I love this place already.”

Kayla sighed in resignation. Aiden would never change. “Whether or not you love this place, or however big your hamburger is, you have to pay attention. We’ve discovered the common denominator of the recent shootings, but if we’re right, it could mean both of us will die. Then who will notify the authorities?”

“We’ll be fine,” Aiden said. He used such a serious tone Kayla almost believed him.

Almost.

Before they could continue their conversation, a waitress appeared and took their orders. As soon as she left, the lights dimmed and the orchestra started playing. The curtain rose, and the play began.

Despite all of her efforts, Kayla found herself being distracted from her mission by the wonderful actors, enchanting sets, and beautiful music. Truly, this director was a master. Gideon Bullright. She repeated his name to herself.

That was when the first shot rang out. People screamed, the actors paused in uncertainty, and most of the musicians stopped playing. Another shot followed, and people dropped to the floor, scooting under tables or trying to get to the door. Some people stood frozen, but others pulled them down to the floor.

Kayla and Aiden exchanged glances, then moved. They both headed for seperate doorways, and Kayla pulled out her cell-phone as she ran. Shots echoed more frequently, and both Kayla and Aiden knew that if they didn’t do something, exactly twelve people would die this night.

Kayla’s necklace began to glow. The heat seared her skin for a moment, then it adjusted. No, Aiden, no! She screamed in his head. Not again!

But it was too late. Aiden, his face full of rage, had reacted. He’d abandoned the plan. Kayla turned to see him standing on a chair in full view of the shadowy figures in the exit doorways. One readied his gun, but Aiden raised his hand, and the man dropped his gun and began clawing at his throat. Another pulse of heat shocked Kayla as her necklace burned.

The other figure raised his gun and shot, but Aiden lifted his other hand and the bullet slowed until it was two inches from Aiden’s face. Aiden maneuvered it until it crashed out of the window to his left. With one hand still encircling an invisible throat, Aiden moved his other and pointed it, palm outward, fingers outstretched and trembling with effort, toward the shadowed figure, who tried to turn and run. But the person was caught by an invisible hand and slammed into the roof above.

“Call the police! Someone call the police!” Aiden bellowed.

Kayla placed her phone back into her skirt’s pocket and headed to Aiden’s side. Moments later, sirens began to sound down the street. The people under the tables had been busy.

Aiden lowered the man at the ceiling onto the ground, sweat breaking out on his forehead. Kayla’s necklace pulsed again, but the heat was weaker. Aiden was running out of power.

Kayla reached his side, and Aiden momentarily glanced down at her. “Hope those cops hurry,” he muttered. “I can’t hold these guys much longer.”

Kayla shook her head. “We were so close, Aiden. So close.”

The doors burst open and cops, with guns drawn, swarmed into the dinner theater. As soon as they spotted the culprits, kneeling on the ground with their arms pinned to their sides and no helpful citizen in sight, they rushed over and replaced their guns with handcuffs.

Aiden stepped down off the chair once the police reached the criminals and relaxed his hands. Groaning, Kayla grabbed his clammy hand and made her way to the nearest exit.

As soon as they reached an empty alleyway, Kayla whirled on her companion and pushed him as hard as she could into a wall. “Are you crazy?” She fought to keep her emotions under control. “It happened again! Again, Aiden. You’ve ruined everything!”

“Look, there they are!” a voice called from the street. A man dressed in a black suit and carrying a flashlight pointed wildly at the pair. Police showed up behind him. Kayla and Aiden looked at one another and ran.

“Halt!” a policeman cried. “We need to ask you some questions!”

As they ran, Kayla panted out a lecture to Aiden, who just said, “I’m sorry, ok! But if I hadn’t stopped those criminals, ten more people would have died tonight.”

Kayla glanced over her shoulder and groaned. “Hold on,” she warned him, and Aiden smiled slightly. She knew what he was thinking. So, Kayla’s finally going to use her powers. Ha!

Aiden grabbed her hand, and Kayla grasped her necklace with the other. She sprang then, carrying herself and Aiden up to the roof of a two story building.

“Did you call Javier?” Aiden asked, twisting a ring on his finger. “Ouch,” he muttered.

“Yes,” Kayla replied. “He’s picking us up at the Central Park. You need recharged, don’t you?”

Aiden nodded sheepishly. “I guess we’ll have to get another mission too, huh?”

Kayla glared at him. “Yes, thanks to you. We’d almost finished this one!”

“Let’s get going,” Aiden sighed, and the two leapt from one roof to the next.

Late-night strollers claimed to have seen two mischievous teens flying impossibly far from roof to roof, headed to Central Park.
